Maddie Johnson (’17): GIS Scholar of Excellence Posted on December 1st, 2016 by

mngislis2016Geography and Spanish double major Maddie Johnson (’17) gave a research talk at the 26th Annual Conference of the Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium in Duluth in October. Maddie represented Gustavus Adolphus College as a GIS/LIS Consortium Student Scholar.

Maddie used GIS to identifying the land parcels in our local Seven Mile Creek Watershed that are the best candidates for participation in the Conservation Reserve Program based on criteria such as proximity to Seven Mile Creek and drainage ditches, soils with a large proportion of silt, and the slope of the land.  The three deliverables produced from this analysis were a file geodatabase, a map identifying the parcels, and a report with descriptive information about the chosen parcels.
