Gustavus Students and Faculty Join National Solidarity Fast for Climate Action

aWhat: Solidarity Fast for Climate Action
When: THIS FRIDAY, November 22, sun up to sun down
Who: YOU, GAC students and faculty, and students at 65 other campuses across the nation!

Yeb Saño, the lead delegate from the Philippines at the UN Climate Change Conference, is currently fasting in solidarity with the millions of Filipinos who are suffering the effects of Typhoon Haiyan. Students across the nation are taking up this call to action, and are joining this fast to raise awareness for this disaster. Friday, as a national day of solidarity is an unprecedented opportunity to influence politicians and raise awareness about the urgency of climate change across the United States.

On Friday, here at Gustavus, students and faculty will be fasting in solidarity from sun up to sun down to raise awareness about the urgency of climate change and to push forward with divestment from fossil fuels at Gustavus. Would you be willing to fast for a day and be a part of a national movement happening on more than 65 campuses across the country?

More information can be found on the campaign’s Facebook page:

If you are willing to join us in the Solidarity Fast for Climate Action, please read the following information:

1) Please contact Gustavus student Anna McDevitt and let her know that you are fasting and when you will be fasting so that I can have all the proper information for the Weekly.

2) Even if you are fasting another day, please wear orange on Friday, November 22 so that we can create a sense of visual unity among those of us fasting on campus. Orange is the color of fossil fuel divestment campaigns across the country, including ours.

3) We will be standing in the Caf with signs and other visuals from 12:30-2:30 (lunch times) to raise awareness about the issue and to provide students with an opportunity to get involved with Divest Gustavus as a sort of next step “action” after learning more about what we’re doing.

Thank you for your participation! We are excited to fast in solidarity with you!
