A Congress with an international commute? Posted on August 8th, 2012 by

To serve in a country’s Congress or Parliament, does one need to reside in that country? Increasingly, some countries are saying no and allowing those in the diaspora–those living abroad–to run for election. On August 16, when the new President of the Dominican Republic,  Danilo Medila, begins his term, there will also be seven new members of Congress who hail from places like Newark, New Jersey.

“New Jersey is aggressively positioning itself in Dominican politics, whether it is local U.S. politics or politics in the Dominican Republic,” said Dr. Ramona Hernandez, director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at City College of New York, as quoted in The Wall Street Journal.
