Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Glacial Watershed Mapping in the Peruvian Andes

The glaciers of the Peruvian Andes are rapidly retreating, transforming the hydrology and impacting the socio-economic and environmental systems of the region. Documentation of these changes is hindered by technologic and logistic challenges caused by complex topography, landscape heterogeneity and variable weather. However, recent developments have made Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology a viable and potentially transformative method for studying earth surface changes and hydrologic processes. This talk will explore both the technical details and the relative merits of applying UAV technology to study environmental change in remote settings, and its potential to bridge the spatial gap between point and pixel.
