The Gustavus GEG-240 Fundamentals of GIS class, taught by Dr. Jeff La Frenierre, got to see a drone in action this week as Erik Johnson (’02) brought a drone to campus to image Linnaeus Arboretum. This drone is essentially a (high-end!) styrofoam model airplane mounted with a camera and GPS unit. Special software geometrically corrects and mosaics the images to create a seamless, detailed image of the Arb. This particular drone is used for remote sensing of agriculture in Minnesota and the greater region: farmers and agricultural co-ops are interested in how images from drones can help them monitor crop health and yield. For more information, see Erik’s company webpage, Leading Edge Technologies.
