I’ve arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, for a week of research on the situation after the January 12, 2010, earthquake disaster. I’m also carrying with me eight tents that students, staff and faculty at Gustavus donated to people in Haiti. The tents are in high demand! I wish you could hear people’s voices when they say, “You have a TENT for me?” Thank you, Gustavus!
Those fortunate enough to have a tent often have no place to put them except in the middle of the road.David (who really likes my umbrella) and his family received one of the tents.The tents! Thanks to Ben B. for lending me two bags to carry them in. I managed to fit seven tents in the two checked bags and one tent in my carry-on bag.David's neighborhood was hit hard by the earthquake. A stone's throw from where David lives, one story of his church pancaked–this used to be a grand, four-story building in a densely populated neighborhood. No one knows how many died inside; they haven't been able to remove the bodies. Because the building is leaning badly, everyone runs when they have to walk past it.
